Get involved in your child's education... Volunteer at school!!

There are plenty of opportunities at the school for you to volunteer. Whether you have an hour a week to spare, or just random bits of time here and there, we could use your help. See below for current needs. I also send out periodic e-mail messages requesting volunteers for one project or another. If you haven't received any of these messages yet, please send me your e-mail address and I will add you to the distribution list. Thanks!!

Volunteer Coordinator, L. R. Green Educational Foundation

Current Volunteer Needs:

Listening Program:

We need volunteers to help with the Listening Program, which is an 8-week program. One person is needed per day, from 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. to supervise 6 children while they are listening to CDs. Volunteers are needed every day (MTWThF). The same person can help all week, or a different person each day of the week.

Duties include helping children get set up on earphones and having them follow the correct sequence of the tracks on the CD. You can bring your own child with you -- they could read or do homework quietly in the room while you work.

If you can help even one day a week, please contact Ellen Gallego at egallego@eusd4kids.org or by phone during school hours at 760-432-2260, ext. 222, or after 5 pm at 760-489-8909.

Library:

Parent volunteers are welcome and needed in the library!

The Library is open: Mon - Fri: 7:45 - 1:00

Closed briefly from: 10:20 - 10:35 and 12:00 - 12:30

The best time for volunteers to come reshelf books is from 7:45 until 10:20. Other helpful times would be from 10:35 - 12:00 or 12:30 - 2:00.

If you have little ones at home, feel free to bring them along and they can play quietly or read books while you work next to them. There is only one class that visits the library on Fridays (at 9 a.m.), so Friday may be a good day for volunteers with younger children to help out.

Shirley Rochester, the Librarian, has a binder at her desk with easy instructions on how to reshelf books. so take a quick look and get started right away!

You can also contact Lori Redman, Volunteer Coordinator at loriredman@cox.net

STAR Snacks Coordinator:

Celeste Mikulics is handling for 2009-10.

We are in need of a volunteer willing to take over the responsibility of handling the ordering and distribution of snacks for the students during testing in the spring. This is a one-time commitment that requires a total of about three hours of time. Please e-mail Teresa Lloyd at: mtlloyd@cox.net.

Scholastic Book Fair:

Becky Campbell is coordinating for 2009-10. Please contact Becky at jjbecky21@yahoo.com if you can help work at the bookfair.

We generally hold a Scholastic Book Fair in the fall of each school year. The coordinator must be someone who is available for an entire week - before, during, and after school (although the coordinator does not need to be present in the auditorium all day, every day, as long as there are other volunteers). The job involves recruiting volunteers to help with set-up and breakdown of the materials, assisting visiting classes, and cashier duties.

This year, it is currently scheduled for December 1-7, 2009. We also need volunteers during the school day throughout the book fair to handle sales. Please e-mail Teresa Lloyd at: mtlloyd@cox.net.

Student Awards:

Sandi Pulido is handling for 2009-10.

We are in need of a volunteer willing to take over the responsibility of handling student awards. An Awards Assembly is held approximately six times a year on a Friday morning. To prepare for an assembly, award buttons need to be counted, sorted by teacher/grade level (this can be done at home) and distributed to teachers prior to the assembly. The volunteer also coordinates with the cafeteria supervisor to order treats (i.e frozen fruit bars) that are stored in the cafeteria freezer until the afternoon of awards day. On awards day, the volunteer gets the treats from the cafeteria and distributes them to the winners outside of the cafeteria from about 2:00 - 2:25. Please e-mail Teresa Lloyd at: mtlloyd@cox.net.

Accelerated Reader (AR) Program

AR Coordinator & AR Assistants

The Coordinator (Cyndi Kaiser) and one Assistant position (Virginia Toledo) have been filled for 2009-10. One additional assistant is needed.

The Accelerated Reader (AR) Program is a way of testing how well students understand the books they have read. L. R. Green has computerized tests available for many of the books in our library. Once they have read a book, students may take the comprehension tests and earn points base on their test score. When they reach certain point levels, they earn prizes.

At the beginning of the school year, the AR Coordinator determines the budget and buys AR prizes. Every 4 to 5 weeks, the Coordinator runs a report from the AR software in the library. The Coordinator and Assistants each handle one or two grade levels, and, using the report, they determine which prizes each child at the school has earned. Some cross-checking with the previous report needs to be done to ensure that a student doesn't receive duplicate rewards for the same threshold. Then prizes are bagged and delivered to the teachers. The AR Coordinator also orders trophies and handles the year-end awards for the students with the highest number of points in June.

The Coordinator position takes approximately 20 hours each school year. If there are 2 Assistants, each will spend around 1 hour each time the AR reports are run. If there is only 1 Assistant, it will take 2 hours each time. Reports are run around 6 times each school year.

  • Booster Nights - Organize booster nights with local restaurants 2-3 times during the school year. Involves a few phone calls for scheduling and follow-up calls to collect checks afterwards.
  • Slices Pizza - Coordinate with Tom Ferguson (Slices Owner) as needed regarding their Wednesday Winners Program. On the third Wednesday of each month, L. R. At the end of the school year, organize a pizza party for the classes with the highest receipt total (one party for the highest 20-student class, another for the highest 32-student class).
