Bear Valley
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)

Dear Parents,

I have volunteered for the position of PTO President for Bear Valley Middle School and wanted to introduce myself. I moved to Escondido approximately five years ago, a transplant from Orange County, and married Ken Lord. We have blended our family and have two children, Ashly Lord, a third grader in Rancho Bernardo, and Brayden Bolen, a 7th grader at BVMS. As a family we enjoy camping in our RV, all water sports (boating, fishing, etc.) and spending time with the wonderful friends we have made. Before marrying and becoming a domestic goddess, I worked full time and have a diverse background from sales and management to working as a paralegal. My last position was with a fortune 500 company, as a sales manager and trainer where I learned the importance of working as a team to manage goals and work effectively together to complete priorities. As a person, I am very gregarious and appreciate honest, open communication. As such, please feel free to stop me on campus or about town as I would like to get to know everyone within the BVMS family.

As you know, we have some big changes on campus this year, welcome to our new Principal, Mr. Garner, and new PTO members (myself included). More importantly, I am excited over the opportunities provided by change, as change brings with it fresh ideas and a new sense of energy that I hope will encourage more parents to volunteer to meet, better yet exceed, our fundraising goals.

This year, more than ever, parent involvement is crucial due to the state wide cut backs which have greatly affected schools. Our school and teachers need assistance to try and make up for these cutbacks in order to provide our children with the tools they need to succeed. Every parent, Dads we need you too, can make a difference by volunteering any available time to ensure the success of our fundraisers. The PTO is initiating a program, called “The Power of Two”, asking for two hours, that’s all, this year from parents to assist in organizing or working in a fundraisers or school event. Of course, if you can possibly volunteer more time we will find plenty for you to do!! I want to reiterate though the importance of volunteering any time you may have available, as we have a lot to accomplish and with your support we can make this year the most successful yet!!

I would also like to put into place a bi-lingual Executive Board Member to assist us in reaching out to the many B.V.M.S. parents I understand want to volunteer but feel hindered by their inability to speak English. I am confident with a bilingual Executive Board Member, we can effectively involve a much larger percentage of B.V.M.S. parents in the PTO and on our campus. Additionally, this position would facilitate involvement of the surrounding Hispanic community and businesses for our fundraising events. If you would like to learn more about this position or volunteer, please contact me. I can be reached via email at chris.lord@cox.net, thank you.

I would also like to extend an open invitation to parents, teachers or students to send me ideas and suggestions for fundraising. My email is chris.lord@cox.net. My focus for our fundraising events this year is to incorporate more family oriented community events and greatly appreciate input to ensure participation, and ultimately success, of the events.

I look forward to meeting and working with everyone in the 2008-2009 school year.
