Shells were often used as money

Trade:

The Kumeyaay as with all other tribes of Southern California carried on trade with their neighbors, both near and far. The trading trails were generally east and west (Interstate 8, is an ancient Indian trail) but trails did go north to Santa Barbara and as far south as Baja California. Trading was as much a social event as it was business.

Some of the favorite trading items were:
Meats
Baskets
Pottery
