San Diego de Alcala
The mission moved to this location in 1774.
We have traveled by the interstate, 6 miles East to continue our field trip.
After going up the "knoll" as the missionaries described it, we arrive at the doors to the mission. The inside is dark and the pictures show this. We started our tour looking around the grounds in front, then entered to the right of this picture. To view the layout of the mission click here!
The statue of Padre Junipero Serra stands in the entry gardens.

The "Guadalupe Shrine" is found in the entry garden as well.

It's hard to see in this picture - better in the next one - but this is the "Casa del Padre Serra".
This is the only room that remained after the Native attack on the mission in 1775. The break in this picture is actually a large wooden beam.

Es dificil ver en la foto - mejor en la siquiente - pero ésta es "Casa del Padre Serra". Este es el único cuarto que. Se quedó después del ataque de los indígenos en la mission en 1775. Los ladrillos en esta foto es actual mente una larga brilla.
This is a closer view without the beam in the way. You can see the small fireplace, original tile floors and the few furnishings the Padres had. Some say there is a secret underground passageway by or just inside the fireplace, we couldn't see it. The room is blocked off to prevent harm to any of the visitors.

Esta es la cista más cerca sin la viga. Se puede ver la pequeña chimenea, los pisos originales y los pocos muebles que tenian los Padres. Unas personas dicen que habían un pasaje secreto abajo de la tierra justo adentro en la chimenea; nosotros no podimas mirarlo. El cuarto está tapado para evitar que lo hagon daño unos visitantes.

Just outside the church is the interior gardens. This is where you climb up the stairs to ring the bells, called the "Campanario". Right after we took this picture someone came to ring the bells, he does this everyday at 11:00. After talking to him, we went to the museum and forgot to take pictures of the garden.

Justo afuera de la iglesia están las jardines interiores. Aqui se puede subir las escaleras para tocar las campanas, llamada el campanario. Pronto después que sacamos esta foto, alguien llegó para tocar las campanas. Eso lo hace todos los dias a las 11:00 pol la mañana. Después de hablar con él, fuimos al museo y se nos olvidó sacar fotos del jardin.
In many of the books we read the author mentioned the beautiful robes the Padres wore on Sunday. This is a robe of that time, I can see why the Native Californians were in love with this cloth.

This is the oven, located in the patio, along with some of the kitchen tools used.

The "digs" were done by students from the University of San Diego. Some of the artifacts are on display in the museum. It is believed that these were home sites dating back to the years prior to 1813.

Another view of the "digs", it's too bad that these are scheduled to be covered up with dirt. The rains are damaging the remains and a roof to cover them is very expensive.

A side view of the mission front shows the thickness of the adobe. These facades were used as walls to make the missions look much larger than they actually were.

This cross marks the place where Padre Luis Jayme was killed at the age of 35.
