Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs)

In 2005 the Escondido Union School District moved forward with a plan to require health technician positions to be replaced with Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs). This was due to the need to support the expanding medical requirements of students and wanting personnel to be trained/certified to support these students.

Director of Classified Personnel, Jean Welser searched out programs that employees could participate in to acquire this training. MiraCosta had a program, but was not conducive to the work hours of current employees. The college devised a part-time LVN program, which 10 of our health techs have participated in. It was held in the summer and in the evening/weekends. (A very intensive program.) It has become a model program due to the success of this initial group and will continue with the program due to the success. Students graduated in August and will now take the state exam to become certified. In the near future, all sites will have LVNs to staff the health office.
