iChat AV OS X Applications - iChat

Current version (OS 10.4):   iChat AV 3.1
District licensed version (OS 10.4):   iChat AV 3.1

iChat AV 2.1 comes with OS 10.3, for which we have a district license. Computers shipped after May 2005 come with Tiger (OS 10.4) which includes iChat AV 3

iChat AV 2.1 allows users to send instant text messages, audio messages, and video conferencing. In order to use iChat AV, you need an account. This account can be a .Mac account (subscription) or an AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) account (free).

Buddy Lists

When in iChat AV you can add friends and family to your Buddy List. People who are currently online with iChat open will show up available in your list. People not online are greyed out.

Rendezvous/Bonjour Messaging

Using Rendezvous networking technology, you can send text and audio messages with other people in your local network using Rendezvous messaging. This involves having a Rendezvous window showing connected users in your local network. The Rendezvous window is separate from your Buddy List window. You can also exchange files with people on your network via iChat AV Rendezvous messaging.

Sending Files

One handy use for iChat is to quickly transfer a file. To do this simply drag the file onto the iChat window. It is sent to the other person, but the other person must click "Accept" to receive it. When sendin a url, copy & paste the url into the text chat window.

iSight Cameras

Using an iSight camera allows you to have a video chat with another iChat AV user on your Buddy List. iSight cameras use FireWire technology and can also be used to import live video into iMovie. When connected, an iSight camera also allows you to import audio sounds into your computer. A digital camcorder can be used instead of the iSight camera.
