First Grade Lessons

 

The lessons below include PDF files that can be read on any computer so long as you have Acrobat Reader. They also include original AppleWorks 6.0, HyperStudio 4.x, and Kid Pix files; you'll need the programs to work with those files. You'll need Stuffit Expander to expand those files (it usually happens automatically).Most lessons contain full instuctions.
Info Cube
Easy lesson where students enter descriptive words or sentences about a subject into a pre-built database template and then add a supporting picture. The work is then output as a foldable cube. Created in ETT Institutes by Wade LeMaster.
Back to Back Books
This lesson includes three templates: a four page/ one piece of paper template, a four page/ two piece of paper template (can be run of back to back), and an eight page/ four piece of paper template (can be run of back to back). The lesson folder also includes a Teacher Guide with important information and a sample of each template filled with dummy text so you can see the output. Sentence Masters
In this HyperStudio lesson, students drag words from a word bank into coherent sentences. It includes a number of themes. Developed in ETT Institutes by Scott Childress and Jackie Zwielich.
Dragon Algebra
Students are given the opportunity to come up with four possible ways of adding a second addend to a given addend to arrive at an answer less than a target number. We’ve provided three different stacks with different target numbers and different given addends. Developed in ETT Institutes by Olivia Fridell and Lori Conner.
Postcards
Students copy and paste an animal graphic and then describe their animal in a postcard addressed to a parent. The finished product will be a printable postcard that each student may color. AppleWorks Database. Developed in ETT Institutes Bunnie Fairon and Janis Lunde.
Number Sentences
Students build and complete number sentences for addition and subtraction using Kid Pix. They also analyze and complete cloze sentences about the problems. Developed in ETT Institutes by Mary Valles, Judy Davis, and Nancy Poon.
Story Elements
Students match words to pictures to select characters and setting using HyperStudio. They then create a story using those elements. There are four story ideas in the stack. Developed in ETT Institutes by Nancy Duty, Mary Gaddis, and Amanda Steeg.
Making Words Fun
This is a fun and easy lesson using HyperStudio Player where kids complete a number of word building exercises with each vowel. At the end of each activity, theere is an animated treat. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Sight Words
Very easy lesson wherer students choose proper spellings of common sight words using a premade database template. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Building Numbers
This is a very cool, very easy to use HyperStudio stack that will give your students infinite practice building numbers visually to 100. And it's self-correcting, too. Created by Randy Hengst.
Descriptive Writing
Easy, fun lesson where students get to know parts of speech as they use pull-down menus in a pre-done database. When finished they change to a layout where they can read there writing in a linear left-to-right manner. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Zoo Map (Keynote version of this template)
Take your students on a tour of the zoo using HyperStudio Player. Good practice in cardinal directions, map key, and compass rose. Works best as a teacher led lesson. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Weather Calendar
Use weather symbols to keep track of the weather each month. Calendars through July 2002 are supplied, with instructions on how you can easily make new ones after that point. This lesson works best as a directed lesson with your students. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Estimating and Graphing
A series of 10 graphing and estimating lessons using AppleWorks spreadsheet. Teachers should preview the lessons before using with their classes. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Hearts
A lesson that uses HyperStudio to mimic the skills needed for the Fish Multiple Measures Test. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Weather Graph
Once you've collected a months worth of weather data, use this fun, simple Kid Pix lesson to graph it. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Animal Writing
Use this simple AppleWorks database lesson to help get your students writing about animals. Developed in ETT Institutes.
Weekly Weather
Great whole class lesson where the weather in Escondido is tracked for a week using information from the weather station at Rock Springs School.
Chicken
Easy lesson where students assemble a simple picture of a chicken made from basic geometric shapes by following directions with lots of shape and proximity terms.

Tally Graph
Kid Pix Studio templates that practice Multiple Measures skill of tallying and graphing randomly generated data. Four templates and instructions included.


Pig as a Pet
A story-starter lesson that takes students through the Writing Process. It has a Kid Pix based extension to bring in some technology.
Number Possibilities
HyperStudio stacks that practice Multiple Measures skill of generating number possibilities. Developed with Miller School.
Once in a Blue Moon
Take your students on an Internet Fieldtrip to learn about the moon, then use what you learned to complete a moon-based art project.
Patterned Language
HyperStudio stack that follows the patterned language of I Like Bugs by Margaret Wisebrown. Can be modified for other possibilities. Developed with Pioneer Scchool.
