Orange Glen School is one of seventeen elementary schools in
the Escondido Union School District (EUSD). Within a short time our district
will be adding Reidy Creek School (2005) and Bernardo School (2005) for a total
of nineteen elementary schools. Orange Glen is one of the smaller elementary
schools in Escondido, which traditionally has schools ranging in size between
600 - 1,300 students. During October 2003 an annual census of students was taken.
This year that count reflected that Orange Glen School was serving 712 students
in grades K-5. Of these students, 11 were Indian, 14 were Asian, 1 was a Pacific
Islander, 10 were Filipino, 417 were Hispanic, 26 were African American, and
225 were white (not of Hispanic origin). Yes, we are a melting pot school with
great children of all ethnic groups in attendance.
The school facility is composed of both permanent and portable
classrooms, an office complex, auditorium, the library, reading lab, and a cafeteria.
We have a free before and after-school 21st Century Community Learning Center
- Extended School Day Program - on campus this year. A YMCA facility is also
on site for before and after school child care, as well as for childcare during
non-school times. Orange Glen also has two parking lots, the small parking lot
at the front of school and the large parking lot on James Street. The James
Street parking lot is reserved for visitors and parents.
We have an active PTA that works to assist student learning
by training and scheduling art and music docents to work in the classroom. They
also contribute financial support to many programs including student incentives
for the Accelerated Reader Program, "Catch of the Day" sundaes, and special
recognition items for the monthly award winners. Unlike many PTA's, Orange Glen's
PTA gives money directly to each classroom teacher to support field trips and
classroom supply needs. We are fortunate to have such a service focused PTA
supporting our school.
SCHOOL MISSION
Our mission is to maximize student achievement for all students.
We are dedicated to providing a safe, nurturing environment that fosters the
development of the skill, habits, and attitudes our students need to be productive
members of society. While improving academic achievement is our primary goal,
we will address the well being of the whole child to maximize student success.
We will create a climate that is based on trust and respect. Parents, other
caregivers, students, community members, and staff will work together for the
common good of our students. Our progress will be measured in a variety of ways
and data based decision making will be our guide. We will accommodate individual
differences without lowering our expectations. We believe that a child's self
esteem is best built by experiencing genuine successes. Every milestone will
be recognized as a step toward success, and achievement will be celebrated.
SCHOOL GOALS
1. The Orange Glen Elementary School community will create
a safe and nurturing place of learning where all students including historically
underserved populations, including girls, can maximize achievement in all academic
areas. Our focus areas will be Reading, Writing, and Math. (To be measured by
SAT-9, Multiple Measures, and Report Card grades. Data will be dissagregated.)
2. The Orange Glen School community will meet or exceed our
growth target set by the Academic Performance Index. (To be measured by State
Accountability System.)
3. The Orange Glen School community will work towards narrowing
the achievement gap between our English Language Learners and our native English
speakers. (To be measured by SAT-9, SABE, Woodcock-Munoz, Transition Criteria,
Multiple Measures, and Report Card grades.)
4. The Orange Glen Elementary School community will continue
to focus on providing staff development opportunities to teachers which will
assist in creating a more consistent comprehensive program of instruction based
on best practices. (To be measured by attendance sheets, meeting agendas, and
indvidual teachers' evaluation tools.)
5. The Orange Glen School community will further promote teacher
teaming/sharing of students across and between grade levels to best meet students'
individual instructional levels. (To be measured by observation, lesson planning,
and schedules, as well as assessment data.)
6. The Orange Glen School community will minimize student retentions
through early identification of at-risk students, development of intervention
plans that maximize the use of our support services to students, and communication
with parents regarding grade level expectations, current achievement level of
their student, and ways that the parent can support student learning. (To be
measured by Grade level Intervention Plans, Student Study Team data, attendance
for off-track/after school anytime school programs, support personnel schedules,
and individual student achievement data.)
7. The Orange Glen Elementary School community will work to
improve the ability to use technology as a tool for learning. (To be measured
by data collected by the technology committee.)
