Accelerated Reading Program
 Orange Glen Elementary School

The most precious gift you can give your child is the gift of reading. The child who loves to read will not only do well in English and language arts courses, but will, in fact, excel in every area of schoolwork and of life. This is why Orange Glen Elementary has decided to place an extra emphasis on improving reading throughout our classes.

In addition to our special reading program, which is designed to help those children who need a little extra boost in reading, we have instituted a program called Accelerated Reader. A computer-based reading motivation program currently in use by more than 27,000 schools in North America, Accelerated Reader has three main objectives:

• To dramatically improve student reading performance, as measured by standardized tests.

• To improve students’ critical-thinking skills.

• To instill a lifelong love of reading in students.

We are also encouraging all children to continue reading during their vacation time. We feel this is a wonderful opportunity for the students to continue reading and also accumulate more points during vacation.

Thank you for the support and encouragement you give your child at home, it is critical to the success of our program, and remember, each Friday, students are rewarded with a candy treat at lunch if they are wearing their lanyards!

One thing you should notice very soon, if you haven’t already, is your child reading a lot more books than usual. After your child finishes reading these books, he/she will go to the computer in the classroom and take a short comprehension test on each book. As he takes these tests, he will begin to accumulate points for each test passed. We have set up the following reward system for your child:
  • 10 points earned: •Picture taken and posted on the “Readers’ Wall of Fame” in the library.
•For every 10 points thereafter, a star will be added to the picture frame.
  • 25 points earned: •Child receives a soft vinyl tag reading “25 AR points” to hang on their backpacks or from an Orange Glen personalized ribbon necklace.
For every 25 points earned thereafter, an additional “25 point” tag will be given. When they have accumulated 4 of the “25 point” tags, the kids have the option of turning them in for one that says “100 AR points” or just continue to collect them.
  • 200 points •Child receives a bronze Reading Medal
  • 350 points •Child receives a silver Reading Medal
  • 500 points •Child receives a gold Reading Medal

At school we have trophies which rotate between the classes who have earned the most AR reading points for the month.
