Academic Performance Index
HVMS API: webpage; pdf
Description ...

A school's API is the state of California's primary measure of school performance. The calculation is a weighted average of student scores on the California Standards Test (CST) and the California Achievement Test/6th edition (CAT/6). Soon, there will be a test in every core content area. A school earns points based on students scores of

CST Performance LevelsCAT/6 percentilespoints earned
advanced80 to 99th1000 pts per score
proficient60 to 79th875 pts per score
basic40 to 59th700 pts per score
below basic20 to 39th500 pts per score
far below basic1 to 19th200 pts per score
How does the performance level correspond to the CST raw score?
% correct = level?

These are the weights. The higher a student's score, the more points. API scores range from 200 to 1000 because of the range of points earned, 200 for far below basic to 1000 for advanced.

Furthermore, each test has a different weight:

Testweight
(sum = 1.20, not 1.00)
% of API
CST in English Language Arts0.48 40.0
CST in Math0.32 26.7
CST in History0.20 16.7
CAT/6 in Reading0.06 5.0
CAT/6 in Language0.03 2.5
CAT/6 in Spelling0.03 2.5
CAT/6 in Mathematics0.08 6.7

Thus, the most important test (the greatest % of the API) is the ELA CST test. The least important tests are the Language and Spelling CAT/6 tests.

Adequate Yearly Progress
HVMS AYP: page 1; page 2; pdf
Description ...

A school's AYP is the United States Goverment's primary measure of school performance. This progress report is part of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act of 2001. The main component of the AYP calculation is the percent student population that scores "proficient or above" on the California Standards Tests. The target percent increases each year until the 2013-2014 school year when all students must be at least proficient.

In addition to the whole student population, each significant subgroup must meet the percent proficient requirement. A significant subgroup has at least 100 students and they are identified as:

African American (not of Hispanic origin)
American Indian or Alaska Native
Asian
Filipino
Hispanic or Latino
Pacific Islander
White (not of Hispanic origin)
Socioeconomically Disadvantaged
English Learners
Students with Disabilities

To be sanctioned based on AYP, a school must receive federal Title 1 funds.
At this time, HVMS recieves no Title 1 funds.
School districts also must meet AYP goals.
